How to make more doing nothing.

When I finally broke out of my bad business relationship 4 years ago, I was in a pretty bad shape.

I could work only for a couple of hours before my brain shut down an even a simple programming problem would become unsolvable.

For this and many other reasons I promised myself that for the first six months I would say no to all new projects and all offers of partnership etc.

The first time someone asked me to become part of a new (exciting) partnership, I had to sit on my hands and force my mouth to say 'No', no easy feat since I had just sold my “life works” for a lollypop to save my life.

This ‘No’ and the next one and next one slowly led me to get more energy since I concentrated on helping my existing customers, and only enough to make the amount of money I needed for paying my bills.

After saying no to “everything” for a year and a half I was invited by a previously colleague to pitch my idea for a project he had, he liked my ideas and the rest as the saying goes is history, this project led me to build up my business that now has 5 employees.

Last week I went through the same rollercoaster again, even though in a much smaller scale.

The thing that amazes me (again) is how much energy, inspiration and ideas I get when I stop forcing things and start letting go.

The way it works is like this. When I start “doing the wrong things”™ I usually start using a lot of energy, time and concentration on stuff that is more like watching TV then creating stuff. This time I started checking my email all the time to see if I got orders enough, and in the end, this took over all my creativity and programming energy.

Then last weekend I took the (hard) decision to remove the orders email account from my phone, and stopped counting how many orders I got every day on my laptop.

This instantly gave me more energy and I have been programming more on the software the last week than in a long time, this has led to more customers and more money.

10 Ideas for getting more (time/energy/happiness) by doing less

  1. Say ‘No’ to all projects that do not fit your expertise and/or areas of improvement
  2. Go for a walk
  3. Read motivational books
  4. Have a discussion about doing less with someone
  5. Exercise regularly
  6. Sleep more (not too much, just enough)
  7. Make your own (healthier) food
  8. Take a timeout before answering too good to pass offers.
  9. Ignore instant gratification opportunities and go for the long run
  10. :)

Last week

I did get a couple of new versions created, did some minor tweaks to the website and got some more replies from people to why the bought my software.

I finished setting up Avangate and changed my higher price point to be a bundle at 69$

Restarted my rewriting of the website to the new look.

Oh and I got one more link through my link building campaign (Using Linksspy of course)

This week

Work on the new website.

Release at least one new version, today I improved the speed of image watermarks greatly.

Almost same as last week, but hey I have not been doing "The right stuff" so it's not a surprise to me.
